Sheriff Clark Millsap said this morning he thinks his two deputies will be cleared of wrongdoing in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s probe of the shooting that left Gloria Jean Murray, 66, dead.
“We executed a no-knock search warrant, entered the house announcing ourselves: ‘Sheriff’s office, sheriff’s office, sheriff’s office, sheriff’s office,’” Millsap said. “[Murray] came out and she was armed. She pointed a gun at one of my deputies and that’s not what to do.”
Millsap said Murray was suspected of drug-related crimes, but declined to detail what types of illicit substances may have been involved or give specific allegations. The sheriff indicated that authorities believed Murray had a lot of visitors at her Evergreen Trail home in Cartersville, resulting in high traffic volumes, but said addition details of the case likely would not be released due to related ongoing investigations.
The GBI has not wrapped up its investigation of the deputy-involved shooting, Millsap added.

The use of no-knock warrant grew from 2,000 to 3,000 raids a year in the mid-1980s, to 70,000 to 80,000 annually, said Peter Kraska, a professor of criminal justice at Eastern Kentucky University who tracks the issue, according to an 'USA Today' article: http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nation/2011-02-14-noknock14_ST_N.htm
